Travel with a Toddler

Toddlers are brilliant travel companions — curious, enthusiastic, and endlessly entertaining. They're also exhausting. Here's how to make it work.

Travelling with a toddler is a different beast to travelling with a baby. The good news: they're more robust, they sleep more predictably, and they're genuinely excited by new experiences. The challenging news: they have opinions, they have tantrums, they can run away from you in airports, and they will refuse to nap at the exact moment you need them to. This guide is honest about both sides — and packed with practical strategies that actually work.

What to expect at each toddler stage

Toddler travel changes dramatically between 12 months and 3 years — here's a quick guide.

1

12–18 months

Walking but not yet running. Still napping twice a day. Easily distracted. Flights are manageable with snacks and novelty toys. Beach holidays are brilliant at this age.

2

18 months–2 years

Peak tantrum territory. Naps are transitioning to one a day. Strong opinions about everything. Keep routines as close to home as possible. Short flights are much easier than long ones.

3

2–3 years

More communicative and easier to reason with. One solid nap or quiet time. Can engage with simple activities and new experiences. City breaks become viable. Disneyland starts to work.

Survival strategies for the airport and the flight

  • Book a seat — don't fly lap

Under-2s can fly as lap infants, but for toddlers over 12 months a dedicated seat makes a significant difference on flights over 2 hours. They can lie down, you can set up activities, and you're not pinned under a wriggling child for the duration. It's worth the cost.

  • The snack bag is your most important piece of luggage

Pack far more snacks than you think you need — a mix of familiar favourites and a few novel treats held back for desperate moments. Snacks buy you 10–15 minutes of calm at a time. Pouches, raisins, rice cakes, breadsticks, and a couple of special treats are the core kit.

  • New toys and activities — unwrap them one at a time

Buy a handful of small, new toys or activity packs before the trip and keep them hidden. Reveal them one at a time during the flight — the novelty buys you 15–20 minutes each. Sticker books, small figures, and simple puzzles work well. Avoid anything with small pieces that roll under seats.

  • Download everything before you fly

Download favourite shows, films, and apps onto a tablet before you leave home. In-flight Wi-Fi is unreliable and the in-seat screens rarely have toddler-appropriate content. A fully charged tablet with familiar shows is the single most effective toddler flight tool.

  • Time the flight around nap or bedtime

If you can choose your flight time, pick one that overlaps with your toddler's nap or bedtime. A tired toddler who falls asleep 30 minutes in is the dream scenario. Early morning flights before the day's chaos begins are also a solid option.

  • Walk the aisle — don't fight containment

Toddlers need to move. If your child is getting restless, a walk up and down the aisle is far more effective than trying to keep them in their seat. Most cabin crew are sympathetic and will smile at a toddler on the move. Pick a seat near the back for easier aisle access.

The thing that makes or breaks a toddler holiday

  • Protect the nap — plan your day around it

The single biggest predictor of a good toddler holiday day is whether the nap happened. Build your itinerary around nap time — don't try to push through it. A toddler who misses their nap will make the afternoon miserable for everyone. Sightseeing in the morning, nap at midday, pool or beach in the afternoon.

  • Bring familiar sleep cues from home

Pack your toddler's sleeping bag, their favourite comforter or toy, and use the same bedtime routine you use at home. White noise helps in noisy hotel rooms. A portable blackout blind is worth its weight — toddlers who wake with the light at 5am will ruin your holiday.

  • Accept that sleep will be disrupted — and plan for it

Most toddlers take 2–3 nights to settle in a new environment. Expect some night waking and early starts in the first few days. Book accommodation where a crying toddler at 2am won't disturb other guests — a villa or apartment is much better than a hotel room for this reason.

  • The buggy nap is a legitimate strategy

If your toddler won't nap in the travel cot, a buggy nap while you walk or sit in a café is a perfectly valid alternative. Many toddlers sleep better in motion. A good travel buggy that reclines fully is one of the most useful pieces of toddler travel kit.

Why the beach is the best toddler holiday — done right

  • Toddlers and beaches are a perfect match

Sand, water, and space to run — the beach is genuinely one of the best environments for toddlers. They can dig, splash, explore, and burn energy without needing to be entertained. A bucket and spade, a paddling pool, and a shaded spot is all you need for a brilliant toddler beach day.

  • Sun protection is non-negotiable

SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen, a UV swimsuit, a wide-brimmed hat, and a UV beach tent for shade. Reapply every 90 minutes and after water. Keep toddlers out of direct sun between 11am and 3pm — this is when you retreat to the pool, the room, or a shaded café for the nap.

  • Choose calm, shallow beaches

Toddlers need gently shelving sandy beaches with calm, shallow water. The Mediterranean, Canary Islands, and Turkish Riviera are ideal. Avoid exposed Atlantic beaches with waves and strong currents — they're frightening for toddlers and dangerous without constant supervision.

  • All-inclusive resorts are genuinely worth it at this age

The ability to feed a hungry toddler immediately, at any time, without finding a restaurant and waiting for a table, is transformative. All-inclusive resorts with kids' clubs, shallow pools, and beach access are the easiest possible toddler holiday format. Belek and Side in Turkey, and the south coast of Tenerife, are excellent options.
