Spain is the most popular overseas holiday destination for UK families — and it's easy to see why. Flights from most UK airports take under three hours, the weather is almost guaranteed from May to October, and the country has decades of experience catering to British families. But Spain is also far more varied than its package-holiday reputation suggests. From the Canary Islands in winter to the Pyrenees in summer, there's a version of Spain that works for every family.

Best regions for families

Spain is huge and varied — here are the regions that work best for families with children.

Tenerife

Tenerife is Spain's most visited island and one of the best winter sun destinations for UK families. The south of the island — Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, and Costa Adeje — has calm, sheltered beaches, a huge range of family resorts, and reliable sunshine even in January. Siam Park, regularly voted the world's best water park, is a full-day highlight for families with children of any age.

Mallorca

Mallorca offers something for every type of family holiday. The south and east coasts have calm, shallow coves perfect for young children — Cala d'Or, Cala Millor, and Alcúdia are all excellent family bases. The north is wilder and more dramatic, great for older kids who want to explore. Palma is one of Spain's most beautiful cities and easy to visit on a day trip.

The Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and the Gothic Quarter keep older children and adults fascinated, while Barceloneta beach is just a metro ride away. The city is extremely child-friendly — Catalans love children, restaurants welcome them at all hours, and the public transport is easy to navigate with a buggy.

The Costa del Sol — stretching from Málaga to Marbella — is one of the most established family holiday coasts in Europe. Long sandy beaches, a huge choice of accommodation, and easy access from Málaga airport make it a reliable choice. Nerja, Torremolinos, and Fuengirola are all well set up for families, with shallow beaches and plenty of activities.

Practical information for families

Getting there

Spain is served by direct flights from almost every UK airport. Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, and TUI all fly to Spanish mainland and island destinations. Flight times range from around 2 hours to the Costa del Sol to 4 hours to the Canary Islands. Most package holidays include transfers; if booking independently, car hire or airport taxis are easy to arrange.

Best time to visit

For mainland Spain and the Balearics (Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca), May to October is the main season — July and August are peak, with higher prices and crowds. June and September offer the best balance of good weather and value. The Canary Islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria) are warm year-round and are a popular choice for October half-term and February half-term breaks.

Where to stay

Spain has an enormous range of family accommodation — from all-inclusive beach resorts to self-catering villas and city apartments. All-inclusive works well for families with young children as it removes the stress of mealtimes and budgeting. For older children, self-catering gives more flexibility. Look for resorts with kids' clubs, shallow pools, and evening entertainment if you're travelling with under-10s.

How much does it cost?

Spain is mid-range for European family holidays. A week's package holiday for a family of four typically costs £1,500–£3,000 depending on the resort, time of year, and board basis. Self-catering can be cheaper. Eating out is good value — a family meal at a local restaurant costs around €40–60. Supermarkets are well-stocked and affordable for self-caterers.

Tips for a family holiday in Spain

1

Book early for summer

July and August are extremely popular — the best family resorts and villas sell out months in advance. Book by January for a summer holiday.

2

Pack high-factor sun cream

Sun cream is significantly more expensive in Spanish resorts than at home. Bring plenty of SPF 50+ from the UK, especially for young children.

3

Embrace the Spanish schedule

Spaniards eat late — lunch at 2–3pm, dinner at 9–10pm. Restaurants in tourist areas open earlier, but local places are better value and worth the wait.

4

Hire a car for flexibility

A hire car opens up the best beaches and villages away from the main resorts. Book in advance online — airport desks are expensive. Check your credit card for excess cover.

5

Check the beach before you book

Not all Spanish beaches are equal for young children. Look for Blue Flag beaches with calm, shallow water — the east coast and Balearics generally have calmer seas than the Atlantic-facing Canaries.

6

Get a GHIC card

The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives UK families access to state healthcare in Spain at the same cost as locals. It's free and takes minutes to apply for at nhs.uk.
